We buy sisal in bulk at a nearby sisal farm.
Twining is the rolling of fibre into twine. To make a good basket, it is important that all the twine is rolled in equal thickness. Twining takes a lot of time.
Weaving starts in the middle at the bottom of the basket and goes upwards from there. How long it takes to weave a baskets depends a lot on its size, but also varies strongly from weaver to weaver, depending on her personal style, her time available, her experience. The thinner the twine and the more intricate the patterns, the longer the weaving it will take.
Mercy of the Hadithi team goes to the different villages to meet the groups and buy their baskets. She is the daughter of a basket weaver herself. All baskets are taken to the Hadithi headquarters for stocking and selection for different clients.
When packing, the baskets are stacked into each other with great care. For an individual touch, we inserts pictures of the basket weavers and the Quifactum labels.
